Most disagreements at a home game are not about the cards. They are about who deals, whether a bet counts, or what happens when a card is flipped by mistake. Agreeing a short set of house rules before the game avoids all of that.
Use the rules below as they are, or adapt them for your group. Whatever you choose, write it down and stick to it for the whole session.
Players, cards and seating
- Players: two to ten. Six to nine is ideal for most home games.
- Cards: a standard 52-card deck. Using two decks with contrasting back colours keeps the game moving: one is shuffled while the other is in play. Replace both decks if a card is marked, bent or damaged.
- Seating: draw cards for seats, or sit where you like for a casual game. For the first deal, deal one card face up to each player; highest card takes the button.
Shuffling, cutting and dealing
- The dealer shuffles thoroughly (at least three riffles is a good rule) and offers the deck to the player on their right to cut.
- A cut must leave at least five cards in each part.
- Cards are dealt one at a time, clockwise, starting with the player to the dealer's left.
- The deal (or the dealer button) passes one seat to the left after each hand.
Betting actions
| Action | What it means |
|---|---|
| Check | Stay in the hand without betting. Only allowed if nobody has bet yet in that round (the big blind may also check before the flop if nobody has raised). |
| Bet | Put chips into the pot when nobody else has bet in that round. |
| Call | Match the current bet. |
| Raise | Increase the current bet. Every other player must then call, raise again or fold. |
| Fold | Give up your hand and any chips already in the pot. |
| All in | Bet every chip you have in front of you. You can only win what you have matched (see side pots). |
A betting round ends when every player still in the hand has put in the same amount, or everyone has checked.
Antes and blinds
An ante is a small amount that every player puts in before the deal, common in Draw and Stud games. Blinds are forced bets from the two players to the left of the button, used in Texas Hold'em and Omaha. Both make sure there is something to play for in every hand.
Choosing a betting limit
- Fixed limit: bets and raises are a set amount, usually doubling for the later betting rounds. Easy for beginners and keeps losses predictable.
- Pot-limit: the largest bet is the size of the pot. To work out a pot-sized raise, add the amount you need to call to the pot, then raise by that total. With 60 in the pot and a bet of 20, calling makes the pot 100 (60 + 20 + your 20), so you may raise by up to 100, a total bet of 120.
- No-limit: you may bet all your chips at any time. The standard for tournaments and the most popular format today.
In fixed-limit games, cap the number of raises (one bet and three raises per round is usual). Once the limit is agreed, it should only change if everyone agrees.
For newer players: Newer players finding the betting a little daunting? The Poker Whizz Wheel is a pre-flop strategy guide that shows which of the 169 Texas Hold'em starting hands to play from each position, so they can concentrate on the rules rather than the maths.
Table stakes and the bank
- Table stakes: you can only bet the chips in front of you at the start of the hand. Nobody can be forced out by a bet they cannot cover, and no money may be taken off the table mid-game. You may buy more chips only between hands.
- The banker: one person keeps the spare chips and records every buy-in. All chip purchases and cash-outs go through the banker, never directly between players.
Irregularities and how to deal with them
| Situation | Recommended ruling |
|---|---|
| A card is exposed while dealing the first round | Misdeal: collect the cards, reshuffle and deal again. |
| Two or more cards are face up in the deck, or the deck has too many or too few cards | Misdeal. If found after the hand, the result of earlier hands stands. |
| A card is accidentally exposed after the deal (for example the next board card) | It is placed with the discards, or used as the next burn card, and play continues. |
| A player has the wrong number of hole cards | That hand is dead and cannot win the pot. |
| A player bets out of turn | Play returns to the correct player. If nobody in between bets or raises, the out-of-turn bet stands; if the action changes, the player may take the chips back and act again. |
| String bet (chips added in more than one movement without announcing a raise) | Treated as a call. |
| A player announces the wrong hand at showdown | The cards speak for themselves: the actual hand is what counts. |
| A player discards their hand | The hand is dead and cannot be reclaimed, even if it was the best hand. |
Split pots and the odd chip
Equal hands share the pot. If a chip cannot be divided, give it to the first winning player to the left of the button, or make change from the bank if you have smaller chips.
Agree a finishing time
Set the end time before you start and stick to it. When it is close, the host can call "play to the button" or "three more orbits" so everyone knows how many hands are left.
Fair play
No partnerships, no shared information and no agreements to soft-play or split a pot instead of playing it out. See our guide to poker etiquette for the full list.
Home games and the law in the UK
Under the Gambling Act 2005, poker played at home among friends counts as private gaming and does not need a licence, provided it is in a private home on a domestic occasion and no charge or levy is made for taking part. The Act treats any deduction from stakes or winnings as a charge, whether it is compulsory, optional or voluntary.
Squirrel tip: In practice, that means no "kitty" or rake taken from the pot. If you want to share the cost of food, drinks or new cards, agree it separately from the game, and never make it a condition of playing. This is general information, not legal advice; for games in pubs, clubs or other venues, check the Gambling Commission's guidance.
